Colorado Lift News
Summer 2007
Colorado is looking forward to another strong construction season at our
ski areas.  This season, similar to many of the recent years, areas are
replacing heavily used older lifts with modern high-speed models.  Last
March, American Skiing Company sold Steamboat to Intrawest, owners
of Copper Mountain and Winter Park.  With their recent purchase,
Steamboat is proceeding with their base area renovations.  The beginner
slopes, located between Gondola Square and the Christie area, are being
regraded to eliminate the double fall lines.  The Preview and Headwall
double chairs are being completely removed and the Southface lift is being
realigned.  To remove lift lines from the gondola, Steamboat is replacing
the Christie II lift with a new Leitner-Poma six passenger express.
Intrawest expects the lift to be useful on windy days when the gondola
cannot operate.

If you haven't been to Vail Village recently you might have trouble
navigating all the building construction zones.  Vail Resorts is pumping
quite a bit of money in Vail Village as well as Lionshead.  The last major
improvement at the ski area was over a half-decade ago with the addition
of Pete's Express.  Next winter, look for two new Leitner-Poma lifts on
Vail's front side.  The old Highline chair will be removed to make way for
a high speed quad, allowing skiers to double their leg burn on Highline,
Blue Ox, and Roger's Run.  Access to the popular Two Elk Lodge will be
served by the Sourdough Express.  The new lift, also a high speed quad,
will have a top terminal closer to the restaurant, eliminating the traverse
required by the former triple chair.

Beaver Creek is improving their beginner terrain for next season by
installing a detachable eight passenger gondola.  The new lift will replace
the Haymeadow lift and is engineered by Doppelmayr CTEC of Salt Lake
City, UT.  The River Front Gondola will also make its grand opening next
season, providing skier access to Avon.

Skiers and riders anticipate the opening of Arapahoe Basin's Montezuma
Bowl.  The terrain located on the backside of the mountain will offer
intermediate and expert bowl terrain.  The ski area selected Leitner-Poma
to construct their new fixed-grip quad chair (for more information, click
here).

Winter Park's second six-passenger express lift is currently under
construction.  The Leitner-Poma lift replaces the antequated Timberline
chair.  The new lift, dubbed the Panorama Express, begins at the bottom
of Sunnyside and terminates at the summit of Timberline.  Winter Park
hopes the new chair reduces lift lines.
