After a challenging economic year for ski areas, improvements this
summer are few and far between.  In Colorado, only Steamboat is adding
a new lift, which will serve a hotel and condo units.  This new lift was
originally going to transport skiers and hotel guests from the free
Meadows parking lot to Gondola Square in a joint venture between the
ski area and the hotel developer.  After Intrawest determined funding was
not available this past June, the developer opted to construct a cheaper
pulse gondola for hotel guests only.  The lift may be upgraded in the future
to a more efficient detachable model.  The engineering and construction
will be by Leitner-Poma of Grand Junction and is expected to open after
New Years.

Red River, south of the Colorado state line, is upgrading their main chairlift
with a new Doppelmayr CTEC triple.  The new lift will also have a mid
load station, similar to the old lift and the additional capacity should greatly
reduce lift lines on weekends and holidays.  This is the first new chair at
Red River since their Silver lift was installed back in 1988.

Just north of Red River at Ski Rio, a medium sized resort closed since the
winter of 1999-2000, removed their two Poma triple chairs this summer.
The Alpha lift will now reside at Calabogie Ski Area outside of Ottawa,
Canada, while the Bravo lift will move to Berkshire East, MA.  Ski Rio
will not replace these lifts with new ones and the ski area will not reopen
this season.

Outside of Yellowstone National Park sits Sleeping Giant Ski Area.  The
resort, closed since 2004, will awake this season under the Yellowstone
Recreational Co-Op.  The ski area purchased a used Yan triple chair
from Mammoth, CA.  This lift will replace the old T-bar and also provide
more vertical drop.  The ski area's other lift, a Heron-Poma double chair,
will be refurbished and operating this season as well.
