The gentle slopes of Sol Vista
|
While ski areas like Telluride and Vail cater to the crowds, Sol Vista's speciality is
providing a family atmosphere. Since the area's name change a few years ago from
Silvercreek, the mountain has undergone many changes including a base lodge
renovation, a new high-speed quad and a magic carpet lift. Sol Vista's terrain is gentle,
offering an ideal location to teach children to ski or ride. Another advantage to Sol
Vista is their slopes are wide open and lacking the crowds of Winter Park down the
road.
The main chairlift, the Quickdraw Express, primarily serves beginner and low
intermediate terrain. Most slopes from this chair are wide and groomed.
On the other side of the hill, the Conquest lift offers more advance intermediate terrain.
Runs off of this lift are not usually groomed.
Is the traffic on I-70 getting you down? If so, Eldora is less than a half hour from
Boulder via Highway 119. While Eldora doesn't typically get the snowfall of Summit
County, the area has an extensive snowmaking system. The left ridge of the ski area,
above the parking lot is geared towards family learning, with slower lifts and wide open
gentle terrain. A few years back, Eldora constructed a second base lodge geared
towards this learning area. The facility is complete with a ski school office, rental shop
and cafeteria.
If parents can escape, Eldora also offers a variety of intermediate and expert terrain on
the main mountain and Corona Bowl.
Our third selection for a family resort is at the head of the Roaring Fork Valley.
Sunlight Mountain is only twenty minutes from Glenwood Springs and offers an
excellent family retreat. The ski area sits atop a ridge line and has spectacular view of
Mount Sopris from the upper chairlift. Sunlight's gentle terrain at the base, wide open
slopes, and a dedicated beginner lift make this an idea location. Glenwood Springs
also has many inexpensive lodging options in town as well as hot springs.
